Your competitors have the same AI you do

So why do people still choose one brand over another? The answer is older than the algorithm.

Two identical teams labeled You and Competitors, each using the same AI tools

Every competitor you have can access the same AI tools you do. Probably the same ones, actually.

Same ChatGPT. Same Midjourney. Same analytics platform. Same email automation.

So if everyone has identical tools, how does anyone stand out?

That’s the question that keeps me up at night (in a good way).

Most companies try to compete on the output of the tools. Cheaper content. More campaigns. Slicker design. That race is brutal, because the tools are getting cheaper for everyone.

The ones winning are competing on what comes before the tools.

Where AI is good

AI is exceptional at certain things. Volume and speed. Research. Initial drafts. Iteration. Pattern recognition at scale. Data analysis. Personalization at the mechanical level.

Feed it good instructions, and AI will execute beautifully. It compresses work that once required a team into an afternoon.

Where AI falls short

Deciding what actually matters.

Understanding why your customer is different from every other customer in your category.

Knowing that your competitor is making a strategic error you can exploit.

Creating a story that feels true because it is true, tied to something real about your business, your people, your values.

Empathy. Judgment. Context. Strategy.

Those are human things.

The real differentiation

I work with a lot of wineries. Hundreds of them struggling with the same problem: commoditization.

They make good wine. So does the winery 2 miles down the road. And 10 miles down.

And across the country.

They all have websites now. Most of them can generate marketing copy. They can run Facebook ads. But they still can’t figure out why anyone should care which wine they buy.

That’s a strategy problem. AI won’t solve it because AI doesn’t know what makes their business different. It doesn’t know the founder’s story, or why they chose their vineyard, or what makes their winemaking philosophy actually distinctive (not just “we’re passionate about quality” distinctive).

A person with experience, with real curiosity about the business, with the ability to ask good questions and recognize the answer when they hear it? That person can find the differentiation that actually exists. And then AI can help amplify it.

But AI can’t find it alone. And it can’t invent it.

Ways you’re probably not differentiated

  1. Your logo or color scheme. Most visible, least important. Red versus blue isn’t a strategy.
  2. Your marketing message. If it sounds like every other company in your space, you’re just saying the same thing louder.
  3. Your features. “We have this feature and they don’t” only counts if customers actually care. Most of the time they don’t.
  4. Your “about us” page. If it reads like it could belong to any company in your category, it’s decoration.

Real differentiation is harder to articulate. It’s often invisible. It usually lives in why you exist (beyond profit), who you understand better than anyone else, what you’re willing to say no to, and what you do differently because of how you think.

That’s the work. It requires judgment.

The combo that actually works

AI + experience + judgment.

AI handles the execution. It makes you faster, more prolific, able to test more ideas.

But before you deploy the AI, someone has to decide what it’s for. Someone has to know what matters. Someone has to understand the market well enough to spot opportunity others miss, or to recognize a competitor’s weakness.

That’s you. Or the person you hire who brings that judgment.

What this means for your business

If you’re racing competitors at the tools level, you’ll lose. Everyone’s tools are getting better, costs are going down, and the technology is spreading to everyone.

But if you’re executing on a strategy that only you have figured out (because you did the real work to understand your market and your customer), you have something competitors can’t match with a better algorithm.
